    Book details

David Cesarani's Final Solution is an intelligent and thought-provoking short history of the Holocaust. Not only does David Cesarani draw together and engage with the latest scholarly research, making extensive use of previously untapped resources such as diaries and letters from within the ghettos and camps (many of them in Polish or Yiddish and therefore previously largely inaccessible to Anglo-American scholars) but by adopting a rigorously Judeocentric approach the whole narrative of the march to genocide and its aftermath the book presents a subtly different timeline which casts afresh the horror of the period and engenders a significant re-evaluation of the how and why. Eschewing some of the more fevered theses about the guilt of the perpetrators (and indeed recasting how wide that net should be spread), David Cesarani's measured and skilful negotiation of a crowded field is, as a result, all the more devastating.

A brilliant synthesis and interpretation of the greatest crime of the modern era . . . There is so much of value in this harrowing and extraordinary book that it's hard to encompass in a review . . . There are stories here I didn't know and could scarcely have imagined . . . A book that demands to be read and deserves every historical award going. (Oliver Kamm The Times)This is an elegantly written, honest and plausible account and it deserves to be widely read and reflected upon in a continent where racial and religious prejudice is not as far below the surface as we would like to think. Final Solution is a fitting monument to a fine historian and a fine human being. (Richard Overy Literary Review)Masterly . . . Final Solution will take its place among the most authoritative surveys of the persecution and murder of European Jewry in the Second World War (Financial Times)A masterpiece . . . dense with fascinating detail, so very well written, and so passionately and compellingly argued (Jewish Chronicle)With his ability to bring coherence to the confusion of genocide and connect those narratives to geopolitical events, Cesarani makes us rethink the Holocaust (Prospect)Traces a path across a vast mass of material - new and old - demonstrating with urgency and verve how Hitler's progress towards mass extermination of the Jews was never pre-planned or preordained . . . utterly convincing . . . One of Cesarani's most remarkable achievements is to reinvigorate this monstrous narrative (Sarah Helm Daily Telegraph)Lengthy, compelling and devastating . . . a powerful and intensely moving account, drawing on the diaries and letters of those who suffered and died as well as the historical accounts and bland instructions of the remorseless killers. (Irish Independent)It is difficult not to be first moved and then overwhelmed by the mere listing of what happened, and in this respect Cesarani has fulfilled his ambition of reclaiming the killings of the Jews for another generation. (Observer)With his clear, detailed analysis, Cesarani has written a definitive study of the Holocaust that succeeds in bridging the gap between academia and popular understanding. (Lisa Pine BBC History Magazine)Ultimately, the book's greatest strength lies less in rewriting the Holocaust then in chronicling it with vivid and synoptic vision . . . few if any have traced as well as David Cesarani does the global skeins of influence, ideas and power on which Jewish fates hung. A very important book. An enormous amount of detail, but no more than a subject of this magnitude deserves.

Excellent book very informative and although dealing with a very difficult topic. The book was able to explain away the myth of a simple process of genocide against the Jews and get into the detail that it was a very complex part of the war and the Nazis thinking and agenda

Arrived in good time and as described. A fitting final work from an author dedicated to his studies of the Holocaust.

A detailed, readable and informative story of a tragic piece of history

A fine tribute to David who is a great loss to historical research on the Holocaust. This book answers many questions about how and why these dreadful events unfolded the way they did and alert us again to the terrible danger of allowing racist and nationalistic ideologies to gain traction. I read the book while traveling across Europe having met people caught up in some of the events of last year and it feels we are again we seeing alienation and hatred arise in the wake of an economic downturn. The book is fully researched and annotated, but David writes in a very lucid and accessible style, giving enough detail for the reader to understand the complexity of the problem and the different forces at play while preserving a coherent narrative. He looks deeply at some of the key questions that are still asked - could the Allies have done more to halt the Holocaust, why did so many victims go unresisting to their deaths, why did German citizens acquiesce in the actions of their leaders? - and unfolds the causal factors. In many ways his fair-minded and evenhanded approach makes the events even more disturbing if that is possible as they show how civilizations can sleepwalk into atrocity step by step.

This book has much to commend it. Its greatest virtue is that it presents a clear chronological account of the attempted extermination of Jews during the Third Reich and subsequently in Nazi occupied Europe. It rightly indicates, despite presentations to the contrary in popular documentaries and literature, that the attempt to exterminate the Jews was not some long planned objective but rather a set of reactive initiatives to the unfolding of the political and wartime conditions that confronted the Nazis. As historians such as Mazower have pointed out the Nazis were not a collection of super efficient but mad Germans but rather vicious idiotic bigots who did not have the competence to carry out even their own objectives with any serious forethought and planning. Much of the cruelty they perpetrated was due to haste and a failure to think out what they were planning to do. I like the way particularly he explains the course of events with reference to the crises the Hitler regime faced whereby "getting rid of the Jews" turned into exterminating the Jews. However, I cannot agree with all his emphases. He gives the impression that anti-Jewish policy was almost an afterthought at the beginning of the Third Reich, that the invasion of Russia was a way of dealing with a dearth of resources at the end of the initial German campaign in the West and he rather irritated me by failing to acknowledge that the Allies had very real difficulties in dealing with displaced Jewish victims at the end of the War especially as regards evacuation to Palestine. Having written that, this is a serious and very well researched book, which shows how a civilised, industrialised and cultured country can go literally mad when its organs of government are taken over by bigots and idiots. One trembles to think about America after a Trump victory or even the anti-migrant venom released by the British referendum.
